In my new-ish job as a barista, I have learned to be quite a confident coffee orderer. This has come with practice as I have tried our various drink offerings. I am now a bit of a connoisseur. I’ve told my bosses that they have ruined me. I can no longer drink substandard coffee. I can’t even tolerate my own homemade brew. But this is completely fine as that was part of my intention for seeking the job. As with all things in life, I want to savor the moment. I want to experience quality in all that I do. Boy Howdy, did I find the right place for quality. The owners, first and foremost, know great coffee. But not only that, we share a passion for championing our local merchants and businesses. Nope, we don’t grow coffee here in Idaho (that I know of). But we have superb roasters just down the street, and they are masters at their art! Bad coffee is a thing of the past as I sip the best of the best.
I have tried everything on our extensive drink menu. I have also watched who orders what. I have a working theory on the type of personalities that order certain drinks. For example, folks like me who crave a bit of comfort and a warm-cozy will order lattes with all of our favorite ingredients. Tea orders seem to look super healthy to me; no artificial anything in their drinks. No nonsense types (think engineers) like an Americano or Drip, rarely with room for cream. The youngsters tend to gravitate towards the iced drinks with lots of fun flavors.
Okay, I lied when I said I have tried all of our drink menu items. Only one looms large now on my list of, “One day I will try this one.” I have not yet built up the courage to try The Doppio. Here’s the kind of person who orders this drink. Rugged, not afraid of things like bungee jumping off of high bridges or climbing Mount Everest. Yeah, I’m making this shit up, but you get the picture. What’s a Doppio? Two shots of espresso. Period. No milk. No flavors. No nothing. If you are a rugged-wuss, you might have it over ice - but even that I have not yet tried. Why does this intimidate me so? I anticipate it to be a very intense experience. Everytime I think about ordering it, I slink back to Latte Land and known comfort. One day. Bravery in incremental steps.
